Understanding the Bailable Population in Mississippi

Recently, one of my graduate students defended her Master’s thesis, an examination of the bailable population in Mississippi. This work was done in collaboration with The Bail Project, a non profit who’s mission is to combat mass incarceration and restore presumption of innocence, reunite families, and challenge a system that criminalizes race and poverty.

Nithi scraped websites from numerous jails in Mississippi and performed a detailed analysis. You can see the Python code and the data visualizations here.

We are planning to continue the collaboration with The Bail Project in the spring semester of 2022 as part of the Data Science Projects for Social Good course.
